Take breath and read it with the ears

Should this advice from Gerard Manley Hopkins on how to read his own work be applied to poetry much more widely?  Dr Bill Hughes takes a practical approach to this question, using examples, from the 14th to the 20th century, of poems that were specifically designed to be heard, and others which benefit from close, private reading. Part discussion and part performance, this event will also ask ‘what is performance poetry?’

Bill Hughes is a former Principal Lecturer in English and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in 2007. He has a wide experience of teaching and performing poetry, and particularly of devising programmes linking poems and music.
