Directed by Nina Menkes

Brainwashed is a mesmerising visual journey through cinema’s sexist bloodstream that will forever change the way you see and make films.

Using more than 175 film clips from canonical Hollywood favourites and cult classics as well as interviews with filmmakers and scholars, Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power reveals a sinister framework of misogyny and paternalism that, from early cinema to the present day, infiltrates some of our favourite movies.

On Wednesday 14 June the screening of Brainwashed Sex-Camera-Power will be preceded by a special event led by the Institute of Gender Studies: Breaking the spell –  Brainwashed, the gendered language of cinema and how we watch women.

Join us for a panel led by feminist researchers from the Institute of Gender Studies at the University of Chester as they uncover the gendered power dynamics of popular cinema as highlighted in Nina Menkes’s provocative new documentary. The panel will be followed by a pre-recorded introduction from Nina Menkes herself before a screening of her ground-breaking Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power.

1:50 pm Panel with Liz Hendy and Jo Gardner, hosted by Emma Rees
2:20 pm Pre-recorded introduction from Nina Menkes
