Highsmith’s The Price Of Salt (aka Carol), was the first novel to depict a lesbian love story that didn’t end badly.

Todd Haynes 2015 adaptation stars Rooney Mara as Therese, a shop assistant in a 1950s New York department store, who becomes fascinated by a beautiful and enigmatic customer Carol (Cate Blanchett).
