In a luxury resort a writer, James (Alexander Skarsgard), and his wealthy wife Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are persuaded by a mysterious and seductive young woman Gabi (Mia Goth), to explore the Island beyond the secure boundaries of the hotel. Finding themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism and untold horror, a tragic accident soon leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime. However, James discovers that for a fee he does not have to face the justice and can in fact buy his way out with an unusual procedure.
Deeply disturbing, and sharing a fascination for body horror with his father, David, Cronenberg delivers a shattering satire of the super-rich, powered by a nightmarish but screen–grabbing performance by Goth.
