Jeanne is a shy young woman working the graveyard shift as an amusement park cleaner, she lives at home with her bartender mother who continually harasses her about finding a boyfriend. However, Jeanne is not looking for a man and instead she finds herself drawn to the bright lights of the fair-ground rides. When a new Tilt-A-Whirl ride is brought to the park, she names it Jumbo. Finding herself seduced by Jumbo’s red lights and smooth chrome she embarks on a most unusual story of forbidden love which sets her on a collision course with her overbearing mother.
Blending the fantastical with the everyday hardships of working class life, Jumbo succeeds in creating a convincing and heartfelt story of first love and asks us to question what is normal and what is monstrous.
