This Scandi take on the Vampire film is in part a first love story and part the ultimate revenge fantasy for 12 year old Oskar, who is the victim of merciless bullying at school.
Set in the early 1980s, Oskar lives with his divorced mother in a downbeat suburban area of Stockholm. He spends his evenings fantasizing about taking revenge on his school-boy tormentors. One night he meets a strange girl Eli, and although at first, she says that they can’t be friends they soon form a strong bond. At the heart of this unique vampire film, adapted by John Ajvide Lindqvist from his own novel, is story of two damaged kids, but the chilling and unforgettable imagery elevated this often bizarre story to the realm of cult status. Later the film was remade in America as Let Me In.
Screening as part of In Dreams Are Monsters: A Season of Horror Films, a UK-wide film season supported by the National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network. indreamsaremonsters.co.uk
