Christmas, Sandringham 1991. Princess Diana arrives, alone, late – having driven herself. Something isn’t right and over three days of rigid traditional festivity the pressure begins to build as Diana attempts to break free. Under Pablo Larrain’s (Jackie) direction, Steven Knight’s tight script unfolds like a gothic fairy-tale, whilst Kirsten Stewart is compelling as Diana on the verge of a breakdown trapped inside a crumbling marriage. Staff are sometimes sympathetic –Sally Hawkins as Diana’s dresser, and Sean Harris as the chef in command of the kitchen – and sometimes unbearably insensitive – Timothy Spall as the domineering equerry in charge of the house. Impressive performances and beautiful visuals have led Spencer to receive critical acclaim since it premiered at the Venice Film Festival this Autumn.
