This month, London tuba player and composer Theon Cross will visit Storyhouse as part of long-awaited UK headline tour.

Theon Cross has made his mark as one of the leaders of the thriving UK jazz scene.

His critically acclaimed debut album Fyah, released earlier this year via Gearbox Records, reached #1 in the UK Jazz charts and went Top 30 in the US Jazz charts. With Nubya Garcia on tenor saxophone and Moses Boyd on drums, it duly broke convention in its mixing of jazz, Caribbean dub and dance music, earning plaudits from the likes of Pitchfork (7.5), NPR, Evening Standard, Mixmag, the Quietus and more. A regular contributor to South London’s Steam Down collective as well as the integral, powerhouse bass behind the Mercury-nominated Sons of Kemet, and Seed Ensemble who are also nominated for this year’s Mercury Prize.

Cross has performed with everyone from Kano to Makaya McCraven to Jon Batiste, Pharoahe Monch and Emeli Sandé. His debut EP ‘Aspirations’ was one of the most impactful of 2015, leading to nominations for Best Instrumentalist of the Year (Jazz FM Awards) and Best Jazz Newcomer (Parliamentary Jazz Awards). His new album ‘Fyah’ sees Cross bring the tuba to the forefront, utilising it in place of electronic basslines, whilst also making it a principle point of focus by merging the instrument’s traditional use with his own modern sensibilities.
