Part of: Young Programmers Black History Month

Directed by F. Gary Gray
Starring: O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Neil Brown Jr.

Straight Outta Compton presents a roller-coaster ride of drama from the outset. It begins in 1986 with each of the band members’ stories and the problems they face. Despite their troubles, their creativity in rap music catapults the band (N.W.A.) to stardom. Power struggles between band members and record labels soon lead to bitter division, but as the young men mature, they begin to rid themselves of the exploitation of outsiders and rebuild their friendships to make music together again. The rawness of this film makes it hard to watch, but as a piece of social and music history this is a winner.
