Adapted by Ian McEwan from his own novel and directed by Richard Eyre, The Children’s Act is an intelligent, finely nuanced and emotional drama, with a characteristically brilliant performance from Emma Thompson at its centre.

Thompson plays a high court judge presiding over the case of a 17 year old youth with Leukaemia. He and his parents are Jehovah’s Witnesses and are currently refusing the blood transfusion that could save his life. Unable to decide how to act she makes the unusual decision to visit the boy in hospital – and in doing so creates a peculiar bond between herself and the child.
