Part of: The Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme 2023

The UK’s largest festival of Japanese cinema is back for its 19th edition with an exciting showcase of Japanese films, most of which have only recently been released in Japan, and all of which intricately render their respective dark depths of the human mind.

Directed by Kawatsura Shinya
Starring: Ashida Mana, Awano Sari, Otake Shinobu

New Anime feature from Japan.

Cruelly mistreated by fortune, two young girls – seventeen-year-old Yui (voiced by Ashida Mana) and eight-year-old Hiyori (voiced by Awano Sari) – have both become separated from their families. Lost, with no place to go and trying to find somewhere to call home, they come across a strange old lady, Kiwa (voiced by Otake Shinobu), who offers them her hospitality at her shabby but well-kept home – a mayoiga (old Japanese folkloric concept). The house’s close proximity to the sea, and the opportunity to start a fresh that it brings, slowly breathe new life into the girls. Then, one day, mysterious beings referred to by Kiwa as ‘fushigitto’ begin showing up…
