Jack Nicholson plays David Locke, a journalist covering a war in Africa. Struggling with his relation to the unfolding events he is supposed to report on, he decides to take on the identity of a deceased man he stumbles across to whom he bears a physical resemblance. Using the dead man’s diary as a guide he embarks on dangerous adventure across continents accompanied by a girl (Maria Schneider) he’s only just met.
The third and final film European auteur Antonioni made for MGM following Blow Up and Zabriski Point.
