Set in 1851, a mute Scottish woman Ada, arrives in colonial New Zealand for an arranged marriage, with her young daughter and piano in tow. When her new husband refuses the piano and gives it instead to a neighbour Ada is enraged and determined to get the instrument back. Agreeing to give lessons in return for the piano a story of rage, jealousy and heartache is ignited against the lush, unforgiving backdrop of New Zealand’s forestry and coastline.
