Vita Sackville West provided Virginia Woolf with inspiration for her gender swapping novel Orlando.

Based on Eileen Atkins’ play, Vita & Virginia vividly charts the relationship between writer and muse from when they meet in 1922 until the publication of the novel. The period detail is undercut by a thoroughly modern musical score (by Isobel Waller-Bridge, Phoebe’s sister!) bringing the story into a modern world still grappling with gender-fluidity nearly 100 years after the book was written.

Gemma Arterton & Elizabeth Debicki are terrific as the pair of rebellious, revolutionary and very clever women.
