Sanctuary, by Daniel Bellis

Prior to the pandemic, tourism was largely considered a permanent solution to issues regarding conservation within developing communities, with tourists travelling across the world offering financial aid in return for entertainment.

During Bellis’ recent time in Sri Lanka volunteering with a charity he happened across a government-funded turtle sanctuary, where baby turtles were being housed within a repurposed skip, and large tanks containing green turtles were filled with unclean water due to the sanctuary being unable to source fuel for their water pumps.

In the case of Sri Lanka, the pandemic, the bombings and political unrest has left sanctuaries struggling under the lack of financial support from foreign visitors.

It highlights a potential need to revisit our thinking when it comes to tourism and the reciprocity between conservation and entertainment.
