What is a Reading Hack?

Reading Hack is a programme led by young people aged 13 to 24, who do reading activities and volunteering, called hacks, to gain skills and experience. Through organising activities and volunteering you will inspire others to complete the Summer Reading Challenge.

You will have:

A place to showcase and share your ideas on how to engage others;

A chance to shape your own reading journey in the library, empowered by trained facilitators;

Access to a national website to get inspiration and recognition for your ideas;

An opportunity to complete Arts Award, helping you build your CV;

Access to professional support for your activities.

What is the Summer Reading Challenge?

The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual activity aimed at children aged 5 to 12 years. They are challenged to visit the library 4 times over the summer holidays and read at least 6 books. They collect stickers each time they visit and chart their progress. The library holds activities and events to encourage them to keep returning and to complete the challenge.

What will I do?

Create activities to inspire children to read

Help children to find and choose books

Listen to children talk about their books

Give out stickers and filling in registration forms

Help children to use the challenge website

Collect data for evaluation

When does it start and what would my commitment be?

The Summer Reading Challenge starts on 14 July and lasts throughout the summer. Your ideal commitment would be a minimum of 2 hours per week – we are happy for you to pick which days and times you want to do between July and August.

How do I sign up?

You will need to be aged over 13 years old. No previous experience is necessary. Please complete the below form to sign up. You’ll then be asked attend a planning and taster session (date and time TBC).
