Storyhouse Mentors

Join our community of mentors to support young people at the early stages of their career. Mentors volunteer to support a young person over a 12 month period, helping them to build confidence, networks and knowledge in the world of work. Mentors will be paired with a Storyhouse Young Leader based on their shared interests and will be supported by our team.

Become a Storyhouse Mentor

Are you knowledgeable in your industry? Do you want to empower young people? Are you a good listener? Do you want to connect with people? Mentoring could be for you! We ask that you have three years of work experience in your industry – but don’t be put off! People who are at the early stages of their career also make great mentors. We will support you with training and advice on being a mentor and support you along the way.

Some key skills we’re looking for:
• friendly nature
• willing to share your experiences and provide young people with industry insight
• good listener
• supportive
• able to relate well to people
• good at problem solving or talking through issues
• reliable and committed

We welcome mentor applications from people who identify as coming from a low-income household, living with a disability and LGBTQIA+. If you do not identify as one of these groups, we still welcome your application.

As a mentor, things you do may include:
• helping your mentee set goals and work towards them
• providing learning opportunities
• sharing insight into higher education, training and careers
• giving constructive feedback

We ask that mentors uphold our safe space code of conduct and our values of joy, empowering young people and connecting communities. We are committed to the safeguarding and welfare of the young people we work with. All mentors will be required to complete a DBS check and provide two referees.

Time Commitment

You will meet with your mentee once a month over a 12 month period. Typically, these meetings will be 45 minutes long. These meetings can be in-person or virtual. You may even keep the conversation going in between meetings and keep in touch by email. We hugely appreciate you giving your time. We do ask that you keep in mind the importance of maintaining stability and reliability with your mentee. Please do consider this carefully before applying.

Once you have completed 12 months you will be invited to remain in our network if you wish.

Training

We will host training for all our mentors. This will include:
• coaching
• mentoring toolkit
• how to be a good listener
• safeguarding

We will also give you an insight into our Young Leaders programme and answer any questions that you might have.

Please complete the application form below to let us know you’re interested. This should take 15-20 minutes to complete.

Your details

Living in Chester is not a requirement.

Your work

What field do you work in?
We ask that our mentors have a minimum of 3 years work experience as the programme has a focus on sharing career insight.
I am aware that the minimum commitment for volunteering is for at least 10 sessions at a recommended rate of 1 session per month. In addition to that we ask that you commit time to preparing and following up with your mentee.(Required)

Our aim is that our mentees feel represented within our mentor network. For this reason we will now ask you some questions to help us understand the diversity of our mentors. If you would prefer to leave the questions in this section blank, please just type 'I would prefer not to disclose'. This will in no way effect your ability to mentor or be matched. We have presented categories as per the UK census.

What is your highest qualification?

Referees

We ask all applicants to provide two professional references, which we will follow up at our discretion. Please provide details of two people who can act as referees for you. Please make sure you have received permission from your referees to provide their contact details.
