Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of former Spanish dictator Francisco Franco and the beginning of Spain’s transition to democracy, Marshland (La Isla Mínima) places us in the politically uncertain years that followed his death, confronting some of the country’s most complex and lingering issues. Fifty years on, to what extent has Spain addressed them?

Set in the Spanish Deep South in 1980, a series of brutal murders of adolescent girls in a remote and forgotten town bring together two detectives, who share different ideologies, to investigate the crimes.

This screening will be introduced by Carmen Usategui, Senior Lecturer in Spanish at the University of Chester.
