Complicit: A Michael Haneke Retrospective

6–30 July 2025

Michael Haneke occupies an unusual position amongst arthouse filmmakers by combining mainstream cinema approaches with counter-cinema techniques. Winner of two Palme d’Ors, Haneke had a string of breakout hits from Hidden (Caché) to The White Ribbon and Amour; an unusual feat given Haneke’s commitment to unsettling audiences and deliberately undermining cinematic pleasure.

Haneke endeavours to engage spectators in the process of moral deliberation without imposing universal moral value systems; a process which thwarts the easy pleasures of mainstream film/TV.

Complicit: A Michael Haneke Retrospective looks to examine his filmmaking techniques and his lasting legacy on the filmmakers of today.
