What is Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre?

Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre is an magical annual theatre-in-the-round season in the heart of picturesque Grosvenor Park, a beloved fixture of Chester’s summer. This summer it runs from 1 July – 27 August. Each visit is an extraordinarily unique experience.

Storyhouse founded Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre and this is its 13th year!

What is the volunteer role?

This voluntary post plays a key public-focused role, ensuring an exceptional visitor experience across Storyhouse outdoor events.

Volunteers in this role work as part of a team to steward performances and events. The role includes assisting customers with ticketing enquiries, finding their seat, the safe evacuation of audiences as required, and ensuring the comfort of our audience members throughout performances. Volunteers in this role will also assist with interval services which includes cash handling for small items such as programmes and ice creams.

This year’s shows in the park are A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Great Gatsby. The shifts for these shows are likely to last 4-5 hours and some won’t finish until 10:30pm, so volunteers should ensure they are able to complete the full shift and be mindful of possible limitations on public transport at these times. The steps in the theatre are quite steep, so volunteers should be comfortable walking up and down as the role requires.

We are also producing a walk-around-the-park performance of The Wind in the Willows aimed at under 5’s. As the name suggests, audiences will be taken on a walk around the park, encountering the beloved characters from the story at various intervals. Volunteers on these shifts will be guiding guests in the right direction, making sure groups keep to schedule so that subsequent performances aren’t delayed and assisting the characters in the park. Volunteers working these shifts should be comfortable being on their feet for around 3 hours at a time.

As always with outdoor events, the possibility of bad weather might result in a performance being cancelled. Volunteers should be prepared for this and be flexible.

This is a fixed-term contract supporting our existing volunteer pool during the summer season, beginning 1 July 2023 and ending 31 August 2023. Training will be provided prior to you starting.
