“Oh, Jerry, don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars.”
Boston heiress Charlotte Vale (Bette Davis) is trying to escape the suffocating clutches of her domineering mother. After a brief stay in a sanatorium, where she is treated by Dr. Jaquith (Claude Rains), Charlotte comes out of her shell and decides to go on a cruise. Aboard the ship, she meets Jerry (Paul Henreid) and falls in love, despite his being married. They enjoy a brief affair in Rio before returning home, where Charlotte struggles to forget him and find happiness.
