Event details

Directed by Annie Ernaux, David Ernaux-Briot
Starring Blanche Madeleine, Dumenil Duchesne, Annie Ernaux, Dominique Ernaux

French writer Annie Ernaux (*1940) won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022 and is best known for her autobiographical novels (A Man’s Place, 1987/The Years, 2008, Happening, 2000).

In The Super 8 Years, the author comments on amateur videos of her family life in the 1970s and 1980s. These videos were directed by Ernaux and her son David Ernaux-Briot. Behind this seemingly amateurish footage lies the portrait of an entire generation born during and after the Second World War. The film reflects Ernaux’s literary efforts to question the relationship between individuals and society.

Brenda Garvey and Timo Obergöker from the University of Chester, both specialists in Ernaux’s work, will briefly introduce Ernaux and her work.

There will be time for discussion after the film.
