(Circle Dreams Around) The Terrible Terrible Past by Simon Longman
“We’re back to the start. Always are. Round and round. I knew I was still asleep.” Storyhouse Youth Theatre presents a surreal staging of Circle Dreams Around (The Terrible Terrible Past). We move through recurring dreams: some with chickens, fish, cows, apples and candle making; but there is a rising tension, nightmares, and we can’t wake up. This existential play seen through a young person’s lens, questions dark corners of the world we live in and explores the futility of life. Deeply haunting, yet unexpectedly humorous, using physical storytelling to immerse the audience in this space between worlds. Again and again, the dream begins.
Production warnings: loud music, flashing lights, strobe lighting jump scares
Fresh Air content warnings: anxiety; OCD; bullying; swearing – there are some brief uses of bad language; death – a number of the characters are ghosts who passed away due to complications with tuberculosis; violence – there is one instance of a character being choked in a supernatural context.
(Circle Dreams Around) The Terrible Terrible Past content warnings: mild bad language; brief references to substance abuse; some sexual references; scenes of a violent nature; threats using weapons; themes of animal slaughter; a depiction of a dead chicken; themes of death and grief.
