Macbeth: Creative Audio Description

Making audio description part of the performance

Experience Shakespeare in a whole new way…

What is Creative Audio Description?

Audio description is an access tool that makes live theatre experiences more inclusive by narrating visual and non-spoken elements of the performance – like actions, scenery, and character interactions – in clear, engaging language, enhancing the performance for blind and visually impaired audiences.

For Macbeth, Storyhouse has teamed up with Hear The Picture, who have developed a new, innovative style of audio description. Hear The Picture’s Creative Audio Description explores audio description as an art form it in its own right.

Hear The Picture’s Dan Parr will be providing the Creative Audio Description for Macbeth.

All performances of Macbeth from Thursday 12 March 7.30pm onwards will have pre-recorded creative audio description available in collaboration with Hear The Picture.

Also, a Touch Tour will take place on Friday 13 March before that evening’s performance – if you would like to arrange for a Touch Tour at another performance, please get in touch with us.

Storyhouse’s New Hearing Loop

At Storyhouse we’re committed to accessibility – and that includes how you hear the show.

We’ve introduced a cutting-edge assistive listening system using Auri™, powered by Ampetronic, which utilises Auracast™ broadcast audio technology,  the latest Bluetooth® Low Energy audio standard,  to stream high-quality audio directly to compatible devices.

How It Works

  • Auri systems broadcast performance audio throughout the venue via Auracast transmitters.

  • Audience members with Auracast-compatible devices — such as hearing aids, earbuds, headphones, or smartphones — can tune into the broadcast much like selecting a Wi-Fi network.

  • For those without compatible devices, venue-provided receivers make the audio accessible too.

This next-generation technology works alongside traditional hearing loops and other assistive systems already in place, giving all guests more choice and clarity when experiencing live performance audio.

Explore the Auracast-compatible devices here.
