Interview with Duane-Lamonte O'Garro starring as Lola in Kinky Boots!

Duane-Lamonte O’Garro

Kinky Boots has resonated with audiences worldwide for its celebration of individuality and inclusivity. What do you hope audiences take away from your portrayal of Lola?

Authenticity is paramount. I believe that each person watching this production will have experienced much of what Lola has gone through. I certainly have, but I see it as my duty to keep her story true to life. By allowing her to come alive before the audience and closely connecting with her character, I aim to make Lola emotionally relatable. This way, the audience will leave with a profound sense of truth and honesty.

Kinky Boots is almost 20 years old, what do you think is keeping audiences coming back?

Well, firstly what a great testament to the production but essentially quality, impact and enduring appeal is what keeps them coming back.

Kinky Boots is the epitome of a ‘feel-good’ show. The fact that Kinky Boots is based on a true story, makes it that much more interesting!

How do you prepare mentally and emotionally to embody Lola on stage?

Lola is unique. I couldn’t step onto the stage without being mentally prepared. Having a great relationship with my fellow actors backstage makes it easier to convey honesty in my performance. Moreover, I firmly believe that once you slip into those heels, there’s no looking back. You become Lola, darling!

What’s been your career highlight so far?

Playing Lola in Kinky Boots at Storyhouse has been my dream role for years. I recall reaching out to the casting directors of the West End production to audition for the role. While I did secure an audition, I sadly didn’t land the part. I was devastated, but I’ve always felt a connection to Lola and dreamed of portraying her. I’m grateful for this opportunity and absolutely thrilled.

Kinky Boots addresses themes of identity, acceptance, and resilience. How do you personally connect with these themes through your portrayal of Lola?

Sexuality intertwined with religion in a Caribbean household is undoubtedly a topic many conformists can relate to. It can lead to feelings of identity crisis and a struggle for acceptance. Personally, I’ve experienced moments of uncertainty about where I belong in my community due to being told it was wrong. However, deep down, I knew I was living authentically. Love transcends barriers and guides us to our true place. By embracing self-love, we attract those who belong in our lives. I’m eternally grateful for those around me now.

The choreography and physicality of Lola’s performance are crucial elements of the character. How do you balance the flamboyance with the vulnerability in your movements and expressions?

It’s all about timing. Simon is linked to a trauma that Lola is trying to escape. Most of us likely have something buried deep within us that we’d rather not confront because it brings back memories of a darker time. Remembering these nuances when Lola reaches a point of vulnerability is crucial for maintaining the authenticity of the performance at its peak.

Can you share any memorable moments or challenges you’ve encountered while portraying Lola in Kinky Boots?

The heels. I mean, I’ve worn them when I was younger, but this is a whole new experience, and I’m approaching it with humility. I salute those who effortlessly rock heels and look fabulous in them. I hope I can do you all proud. LOL!

At Storyhouse we have a young company of aspiring actors, what advice would you give to your younger self?

Be patient with yourself. Success in acting doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a journey filled with highs and lows. Stay dedicated to honing your craft, be open to learning from every experience, and trust in your talent and resilience. Embrace rejection as part of the process and use it to fuel your determination. Keep believing in yourself, stay passionate about your craft, and never give up on your dreams. Your time will come!
