Storyhouse Showcases The Best In Exciting D/deaf Talent

A brilliant line-up of D/deaf artists will take over the Storyhouse Kitchen this month in a fully accessible night of fantastic entertainment.

A Night in Sign will feature music, poetry and comedy – all delivered by performers using British Sign Language, spoken English and captioning.

The event on Saturday, 23 October is part of Storyhouse’s commitment to accessibility for both artists and audiences and coincides with the final night of the venue’s new adaptation of Antigone which is performed with signing and inventive video captioning throughout.

And anyone with a ticket for the Antigone run can enjoy this extra evening of entertainment for free.

The exciting line-up for A Night in Sign includes profoundly deaf dancer, street dance coach and choreographer Chris Fonseca, who astounded viewers of BBC’s Greatest Dancer when he appeared on the show two years ago.

He feels the rhythm and vibrations of the music and works intensively to perfect the characterisation in Street Dance and lyrical hip hop tracks.

Expect a stellar stand-up and sign-song set from Caroline Parker. The actor, comedian and sign-song diva originally trained in mime and has worked with leading companies like Graeae, Red Earth, Fingersmiths and Deafinitely Theatre.

She played Sir Toby Belch in Southwark Playhouse’s Twelfth Night, the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella at Doncaster and recently acted as assistant director on My Mother Said I Never Should at Sheffield Crucible.

In 2012 she received an MBE for services to deaf theatre and performed at the London Paralympics opening ceremony, signing I Am What I Am alongside singer Beverley Knight.

Meanwhile actor, presenter and film-maker Nadeem Islam will act as compère for the evening.

The BRIT School trained performer is known for his work in comedy improv and TV presenting including Small World with Mutt & Jeff and the See Hear Tour with BBC See Hear. He was nominated for Best Actor by Deaffest UK Deaf Film/TV award for his performance in Where I Belong and for his work on See Hear by RTS Awards for On Screen Talent.

Other screen credits include ITV crime drama The Bay, and stage credits include Artful Dodger in Oliver Twist (Leeds Playhouse/Ramps on the Moon), Blasted with Graese/RADA and Horrible Histories – Dreadful Deaf at the Bristol Old Vic.

A Night in Sign takes place after the final performance of Antigone, a new adaptation of Sophocles’ great tragedy from award-winning poet Hollie McNish.

The modern retelling of the Greek classic is co-produced with TripleC, a Manchester-based Community Interest Company which works to promote and strengthen disabled people’s access to the arts and media.

Several members of the cast are deaf or hearing impaired and the production is being fully signed with British Sign Language along with embedded captioning throughout.

Tickets for A Night in Sign are £5.

But anyone who has booked a ticket for Antigone during its run can apply for a special code to redeem a free ticket.
