Art As Activism & Climate Justice

Climate justice is often presented through images of disaster, loss and fear. But what happens when we approach the climate crisis through joy, absurdity, whimsy, camp and play?

In this playful, multidisciplinary workshop, Sixth House will explore how theatricality can help us engage with one of the biggest and most frightening issues of our time without becoming overwhelmed by it.

Using our production LIVES as a starting point, participants will experiment with movement, music, performance, visual imagery, writing, and devising to discover unexpected ways of exploring climate stories.

We’ll ask: Can joy be radical? Can whimsy help us process something serious? Can camp make the political personal? And how can theatrical play create space for to imagine a different future?

Participants will be encouraged to find their own relationship to climate justice, whether that is anger, hope, grief, absurdity, confusion, optimism or simply curiosity and transform those feelings into bold theatrical material.
