Bend It Like Beckham
Event details
This film has been hand-picked by the Storyhouse Young Programmers as part of Rip It Up, BFI FAN’s major UK-wide season celebrating youth culture on screen.
Directed by Gurinder Chadha
Starring Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley, Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Football-mad Jess Bhamra can bend a ball better than any boy she knows, but her traditional parents would rather see her settle down with a nice Indian boy. When her skills catch the eye of local football player Jules, Jess is introduced to the exciting prospect of playing for a women’s football team. As she chases her dreams, Jess finds herself caught between two goals: pursuing a future in football and meeting her family’s expectations.
OUR TAKE:
Bend It Like Beckham speaks to individuality, self-expression and the courage to follow your own path, even when family or society expects something different. The film explores cultural and generational conflict while bending stereotypes around gender, sport and identity. With its focus on teen football, feminism, women’s football and sportswear as fashion, it feels both nostalgic and relevant for today’s audiences. Through a message of ambition and belonging, this is a film for everyone, celebrating how similarities and differences can shape who we are.
Pay what you can: £4-£9.90
