Storyhouse Elders: The History of the Office of Sheriff of Chester

Join us for a fascinating journey through Chester’s local and civic history, featuring a special presentation on the Sheriff of Chester. It is believed that Chester was the first English town to have a Sheriff, with the role dating back to 1121. Discover how the office has evolved over the centuries, its connection to the governance of the city and county, and how it continues to serve Chester today. 

As the current Sheriff, Alan Smith, is a former printer, the event will also explore the history of printing and its impact on communication, education, and society, both in Chester and beyond.   

As part of this unique experience, visitors will have the opportunity to: 

• Print their own souvenir keepsake using the Sheriff’s vintage letterpress printing machine.

• Meet the Sheriff of Chester and take a commemorative photograph.

• Ask questions and enjoy informal discussions about Chester’s rich civic heritage and traditions.
