Event details

Directed by Sofia Coppola
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Steve Coogan, Rip Torn

Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette is a sympathetic account of the private life of France’s iconic but ill-fated queen. Retelling her story from her betrothal and marriage to Louis XVI at 14 to her reign as queen at 19 and ultimately the fall of Versailles.

Shot on location in the Palace of Versailles and propelled by an enigmatic central performance from Kirsten Dunst, Marie Antoinette offers a playful picture of opulence and excess.

Why the Storyhouse Young Programmers chose it:

“Sofia Coppola’s historical drama highlights the loneliness of being a woman in a world where you are seen as no more than a commodity. The strength shown in femininity throughout her film is refreshing, seeing examples of feminine power and agency in this historical setting allows the audience to emphasise with Marie Antoinette as we see her swept up into a world with the illusion of power but no control.”
