In the 23rd century, a starship crew travels to the distant planet Altair IV to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a group of scientists sent there 20 years earlier.

Upon arrival, Commander John J. Adams (Leslie Nielsen) and his crew discover the expedition’s lone survivor, Dr Edward Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), living with his daughter, Altaira (Anne Francis), and a highly intelligent servant, Robby the Robot.

As Adams uncovers the fate of the original crew, he is pulled into a mystery involving an extinct alien civilisation and an invisible threat lurking on the planet.
