What is BFI Film Academy and who is it for?

If you’re 16 to 19 and want to learn about or work in film, BFI Film Academy is for you! BFI Film Academy is a short film course aimed at those either wanting to take the first step in filmmaking or improve on existing skills. You’ll have fun with filmmaking, gain confidence, and learn more about the thriving industry of VR and 360-degree filmmaking. These courses help train and inspire the next generation of UK filmmakers. No previous filmmaking experience is necessary.

When and where is it?

The course takes place on the following dates:

Sat 15 Oct: 10am-5pm
Sat 22 Oct to Friday 28 Oct: 10.30am-5pm each day
Tues 1 Nov: 5-6.30pm
Tues 8 Nov: 5-6.30pm
Tues 15 Nov: 5-6.30pm
Tues 22 Nov: 5-6.30pm
Tues 29 Nov: 5-6.30pm
Sun 11 Dec film premiere: 10am-6pm

The course is at Storyhouse (Hunter St, Chester).

How much does it cost?

BFI Film Academy Chester costs £25 to attend. If you think you will struggle to find this amount or might need assistance covering other associated course costs such as travel and childcare, please still apply – if your application is successful, we’ll make sure you can attend – there is a bursary fund to cover these costs where eligible. What will I do on the course?

On our BFI Film Academy Short Course, you will:

  • Be involved in making a short film, either individually or as part of a team

  • Be guided through the filmmaking process from start to finish.

  • Be supported to turn your own ideas and stories into a film

  • Learn from industry professionals

  • Begin to make great new contacts

  • Review short films

  • Experience immersive 360 filmmaking

  • Work towards achieving a Silver Arts Award qualification

Please get in touch if you need support with your application – we want the process to be as accessible as possible and we are more than happy to support you or adapt to accommodate individual needs. Applications open on 1 September 2022 and close on 1 October.
