Applications are now OPEN! Until 5 October.

British Film Institute Film Academy is a week-long film-making course (during half-term) at Storyhouse.

Are you 16-19? Passionate about film? Interested in a career in the film industry?
If so, the BFI Film Academy Chester is for you.

What is BFI Film Academy?

The BFI Film Academy Chester  is a film-making course from the British Film Institute in partnership with Storyhouse and West Cheshire College. It will begin with a day on Saturday 19 October and then run from Sunday 27 October through to Saturday 2 November (approximately 11am-6pm each day). You will be based at Storyhouse, with some practical sessions at Cheshire College. Participants can expect to develop their filmmaking skills, particularly in 360° filmmaking and commercial and cultural knowledge of film.

It helps train and inspire the next generation of diverse and talented 16-19 year-olds. It is an intensive short course providing great links to the industry packed with practical elements, giving participants hands on experience of making films from start to finish guided by leading film professionals and working towards gaining a Silver Arts Award.

Previous filmmaking experience is not necessary.

Why should I apply?

Gaining work experience in competitive, growing industries such as the film sector through schemes like the BFI Film Academy can give young people the edge when applying for roles. As well as the Academy in Chester, the BFI Academy scheme offers an additional supportive programme of career development opportunities to all Academy participants, including residential courses around the UK, BAFTA mentoring and apprenticeship schemes with some of the most Internationally recognised film companies such as Lucas Film who produce the Star Wars films.

What does it cost?

The one-off course fee is £25, however bursaries are available for participants who need financial help with the costs of travel, childcare or other costs. If you think you will struggle to pay the £25 course fee, please still apply – if you have the passion and are the right fit we’ll make sure you can attend.

Who can apply?

We welcome applications from talented young filmmakers from all backgrounds, aged 16-19, who are UK residents and have not previously attended a BFI Film Academy course.  If you are currently at university, or will be enrolled at university when the course starts, we regret to inform you that you are not able to apply.
